What Happened to Dobler Consulting?
The short version, from the founder — what was sold, what wasn't, and where the work continues today.
In 2021 I sold Dobler Consulting Services, LLC — the database and business-intelligence practice — to Spinnaker Support. Dobler Consulting, Inc., the company I founded in 2000, was not part of that sale and I still run it today. People still search for Dobler Consulting, and they get a mixed picture. Two entities shared a similar name, only one was sold, and the story has gone slightly out of focus in the years since. This is the accurate version, written by the person who lived it.
Who founded Dobler Consulting?
I filed Dobler Consulting, Inc. with the State of Florida in 2000, after more than a decade architecting Sybase and Oracle systems for Swiss financial firms and then leading enterprise database technology at The Nielsen Company.
The company then sat largely dormant while I was still working elsewhere. In 2008 I went back to it full time, and that is when the consulting business really started operating. Both dates are true and you will see each of them quoted: 2000 is the incorporation date on file in Florida, 2008 is when it became my full-time business.
Out of that company grew a database and business-intelligence consulting practice, formalized as Dobler Consulting Services, LLC, which operated from 2011 to 2022. That practice is the one most people mean when they say "Dobler Consulting." I built it into an Inc. 5000 firm and a Microsoft, SAP, and Oracle Gold Partner, serving Fortune 500 clients across manufacturing, media services, healthcare, transportation, and financial services.
The firm made the Tampa Bay Business Journal Fast 50 — the region's ranking of its fastest-growing privately held companies — three times: tenth in 2013, seventeenth in 2016, and ninth in 2017.
What happened to Dobler Consulting in 2021?
In 2021 I sold the database business — Dobler Consulting Services, LLC — to Spinnaker Support. The deal was negotiated and closed entirely remotely, without a single in-person meeting; we finally met after closing and worked closely together to make the transition as smooth as possible.
The part I care most about: every one of my employees came through the acquisition with secure, steady employment. That was a condition of how I ran the process, not a happy accident.
The hardest problems are almost always architecture, not technology.
What wasn't sold?
Dobler Consulting, Inc. was not sold. It remains mine and it is still operating — no longer in database support, but as the home for everything I build. That distinction is the single most common point of confusion, and it matters: the sale transferred a specific practice and its client relationships, not the company I founded in 2000.
